La Porte Tidbits

Ten miles away from Baytown is La Porte. It is a city with a 2010 population of 33,800 residents, making it the 4th largest city in Harris County, Texas. Like its geographic neighbor Baytown, La Porte is part of the Greater Houston metropolitan statistical area. According to the July 2017 population estimate, the city had a population of 35,371.

The city has numerous small 1940s frame houses. Aside from that, La Porte was known for its Sylvan Beach during the 1930s. Back then, the Sylvan Beach became popular nationwide. It was able to the attract Hollywood’s biggest celebrities to come and visit La Porte. However, due to beach erosion, the city’s tourism industry began to dwindle.

The city of La Porte shifted its focus to the petrochemicals and shipping industry after World War II. Now, the Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library is still an integral part of La Porte. In fact, it is a famous destination if you are looking for things to do.

You can visit the Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library at 604 Park Drive. There, you will see the city’s first ever public library, a museum, and cabins. Admission is free, and during the entire year, the La Porte Bay Area Heritage Society plans different activities for both locals and visitors. If you want to know more about La Porte’s history and view art exhibits, do not miss the Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library.

According to TripAdvisor, the Battleship Texas State Historic Site gains the top spot as La Porte’s must visit landmark. It has more than 600 positive reviews. You can visit the site yourself over at 3523 Independence Pkwy S, La Porte, or you can book a whole day package tour.

The tour includes a trip to Houston, the Battleship Texas, and the San Jacinto Monument. You can explore the USS Texas, a ship that served during the 2 World Wars. In the San Jacinto Battleground, you will find the San Jacinto Monument. In its base, you will be able to visit the San Jacinto Museum of History. In the museum, you will learn how the state of Texas was founded and see the various artifacts displayed.

The San Jacinto Battleground is open from 9 AM to 6 PM. The site is recognized as part of the San Jacinto Battlefield, and it became a designated National Historic Landmark on October 15, 1966. In 1922, it became a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

The San Jacinto Monument stands 567.31 feet, and the famous column has a 10-meter star on top. Completed in 1939, the monument was named as the world’s tallest column on April 21, 1939. If you compare it to the Washington Monument, the San Jacinto Monument is roughly 12.6 ft. taller! Do not worry because you will not need to climb all the way to the top. You can ride the elevator up to the observation deck. A picturesque view of Houston and the Battleship Texas will surely mesmerize you.

Another tourist destination to visit is the Juan Seguin Historic Park. It is located at 4407 Independence Pkwy S, La Porte. This little park is open Sunday to Saturday from 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Take an hour or so to relax and unwind after visiting the Battleship Texas State Historic Site. The Juan Seguin Historic Park is right next to the Battleship Texas State Historic Site. The park has been renovated, so you and your family will surely enjoy the garden view and capture some fun memories together. After a long walk, if you are hungry, there are many seafood choices just across the street.

Based from the tourist spots mentioned, it is evident that La Porte played a significant role in Texas history. On April 21, 1836, La Porte was the location of the historic Battle of San Jacinto. The aftermath, of course, was independence of Texas. A month later, it was independent from Mexico. On December 29, 1845, Texas was officially part of the United States of America.

After all the walking and exploring, it is time to relax by the beach. The Sylvan Beach Park is at 576 Bayshore Dr., Harris County Precinct 2 Parks, La Porte. If you want a quaint place to rest and participate in outdoor activities, this is the park to visit. The park is an ideal lunch area. Stop by and dine with your family. The picnic tables provide an open-air dining experience, and you get to see the ships sail. You can even celebrate important occasions at the Sylvan Beach Pavilion.

There is a small swimming area that is great for kids. They will not get restless because there is a nice playground. Bring beach umbrellas, chairs, and even your pets. Enjoy the beautiful view while drinking your favorite cup of coffee.

If you want to learn about the detailed history of Texas, La Porte can show you through its historic landmarks like Battleship Texas and San Jacinto Monument. Experience the rich Texan history through the wonderful city of La Porte.
