Deer Park Tidbits

Deer Park, Texas is within the bounds of Houston-Sugarland-Baytown metropolitan area. It is situated in the southeast part of Texas in Harris County. The citys population, in 2019, had reached 33,891 by the most current estimation of the United States census. Deer Park, Texas is the 96th biggest city in the state of Texas. This is an official estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2017.

On average, Deer Park enjoys 198 sunny days annually. The summer high is around 92 degrees Fahrenheit while the low is at 44 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Sperlings Comfort Index, Deer Park received a score of 38, meaning the highest temperature is above the normal 70-80 degrees.

Deer Park was established by Simeon H. West in 1892. He was an agriculturist, a retired legislator, and travelled considerably from Illinois. He saw that there were many deer that wandered around the Gulf Plains, so he named the place Deer Park. In 1893, a subdivision was founded, and in the following year, in the same location was Harrisburg, Galveston and San Antonio Railway Station. A post office was then established in 1893 but terminated in 1919. However, in 1930, it became functional again.

In 1896, the place had a population of only forty, and by 1922, everything declined and was left with just four houses, a school house, and an ancient hotel shanty, which spread along the railroads right-of-way. In 1928, a refinery was brought in. The slow growth continued, but by 1946, Deer Park grew when it became the site of refineries and toluene plants that produced TNT.

On December 12, 1948, the citizens of the city elected to incorporate and after a few weeks, a mayor was elected, Earl E. Dunn. Because of its incorporation, Houston did not integrate Deer Parks territory within in the citys limits. On February 7, 1949, Deer Parks first council meeting was held. The population increased to 700 in 1948 and to 5,000 by 1960. By 2000, the population has gone up to 28,520. The growth was because of the petrochemical industry and the progress of the establishments along Houston Ship Channel.

Deer Park is in close proximity to the Battle of San Jacinto. This is where Texas prevailed and received its independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836. The earlier surrendered treaty, after the war, was followed by the signing of Dr. George Moffitt Patricks cabin that Deer Park proudly called itself the Birthplace of Texas. The earlier cabins site was at Buffalo Bayou where Rohm and Haas started a chemical plant in the city of Deer Park. You can, however, find a replica of Dr. Patricks cabin right in front of the Theater/Courts Building located at Center Street.

For those who love to swing their golf club onto the teeing ground, visit the Battleground at Deer Park Course that can challenge even the seasoned players. No worries to the novice players, however, because the tee lengths vary to have fun yet be driven by the challenge. Try the 18 holes of remarkable golf gratification, and experience the joy of the rolling fairways, the manicured lawn and, of course, the well-situated water hazards. Schedule your tee time now!

A place where everybody can enjoy would be Sylvan Beach Depot Museum and Library which is located at La Porte. It has heaps of books, articles that tell the local history, artifacts, and photographs, too. You can even take your pictures at the old train cars. While there, you can do a little geocaching, and it is all for free!

A trip so perfect for both parents and kids is the popular Lynchburg Ferry, which is 9.1 kilometers away from Deer Park. It faces the Houston Ship Channel located in Texas that connects Crosby-Lynchburg Road. It is located at the north of Lynchburg, and to the south of La Porte are the San Antonio Battleground State Historic Site and the old State Highway 134. You can bring your cars and bicycles. It has two available servicing ships, but there is one more ferry service on standby just in case. It is a terrific ride and educational, too. This, too, is free!

Go on a historical trip and come aboard the Battleship Texas. What is really exciting is that you can sleep where the sailors bunked down for the night. You can feel how it is to live a sailors life. Battleship Texas is located at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in La Porte, which is 7.4 km. away from Deer Park. After your visit, you can bond with the family in a picnic site nearby to complete your day.

Escape the summer heat, and enjoy where families spend their day. Strawberry Park is a waterpark the kids will surely love. There are three large slides, a basketball hoop, and a pool with a volleyball net. Try the lazy river, and when you get tired, shaded seats are available. The place is not just clean but safe for kids. Many lifeguards are on standby to make sure everybody is safe.
